Sichuan Institute of Parasitic Disease
The Sichuan Institute of Parasitic Disease (SIPD)
is responsible for research of prevention, cure and surveillance of
major parasitic diseases endemic in Sichuan Province, including malaria,
schistosomiasis, filariasis, hookworm disease, and leishmaniasis. Among
all of these diseases, particular attention is being paid to
schistosomiasis due to its serious endemicity, as well as its emerging
tendency in new areas.
In 1986, funded by the Ministry of Public Health in
China, Professor Gu led his team from the SIPD to carry out an intensive
and geographically focused five-year investigation of the factors
responsible for the high endemicity of schistosomiasis in the
mountainous regions of Sichuan. Following that, this project was
extended to five more years with a focus on the development of
intervention and control strategies. In 1996, this team accepted a new
assignment of responsibilities for surveillance of the potential
emergence of schistosomiasis in the Three Gorges Dam area, which is
currently non-endemic.
Since 1994, the Spear Research Group has collaborated with Gu's team in the SIPD to work on the understanding and
control of schistosomiasis in the mountainous regions of Sichuan, by
using mathematical modeling and Geographical Information System
(GIS)/Remote Sensing (RS). With the mutual efforts and the SIPD
colleagues' help in the field work, a huge and unique database
associated with human epidemiology, snail ecology, soil and water
chemistry, GPS data regarding schistosomiasis has been created. Further
analysis work is ongoing.
