University-Wide Funding
The University offers merit-based awards such as Multi-Year University Graduate Fellowships, Multi-Year Diversity Fellowships, and Departmental Block Grant Fellowships. Applicants are nominated by their home departments. For more information on these fellowships, please visit the Guide to Financial Support for Graduate Students: http://www.grad.berkeley.edu/financial/index.shtml.
Acadmemic Appointments (GSI/GSR)
A majority of EHS graduate students become Graduate Student Researchers (GSR) and Graduate Student Instructors (GSI). The number of positions varies each year depending on the availability of research funding and the need of professors. Students are advised to contact the department and professors in the department prior to or at the beginning of the school year to inquire about GSR and GSI positions. Positions are also posted on bulletin boards in the department. For GSR and GSI job openings in EHS, please contact the Department Chair or Professors directly upon acceptance into the program. You may also view GSI/GSR job listings online.
Besides the opportunity to work with professors on research and teaching, another major benefit of becoming a GSR or GSI is fee remission. Depending on eligibility, appointment period and percentage, graduate students holding a GSR or GSI position receive no, partial, or full fee remission.
To be eligible for a GSI or GSR position, students must be registered for at least 8 units and have a minimum 3.1 GPA. Remissions change from year-to-year along with fees. For current fee remission information visit the Graduate Division online: http://www.grad.berkeley.edu/appointments/.
For more information on GSR and GSI positions, please refer to "What You Need to Know About Being a GSI, GSR, Reader, or Tutor": http://www.grad.berkeley.edu/policies/pdf/apptknow.pdf
