The California Air Resources Board’s Health and Ecosystem Assessment Section evaluates the impacts of air pollution on public health and manages an extensive extramural research portfolio. This Section is also responsible for establishing and reviewing State ambient air quality standards, which are the basis of many of the Board’s regulatory activities toward the protection of public health and welfare. Under the general supervision of the manager of the Section, the main duties of this position are to design and conduct critical evaluations of studies involving biological approaches using animal, plant, or cellular models, or other suitable methods, to determine the environmental effects of air pollutants; interpret experimental study results in terms of toxicological properties and hazards; evaluate, advise, and consult on the adequacy of scientific data as they relate to public health and environmental problems. Additional duties include assisting in analyses to determine the health impacts of air pollution exposure; assisting in the scientific and administrative oversight of the research performed in support of the Board’s mission; communicating scientifically defensible explanations of health research results to technical audiences and to the general public; assisting with the development of the annual research plan; and working cooperatively with staff having diverse technical and scientific backgrounds. Some travel is required.
 
DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS: The most competitive candidate will have strong technical, writing, and verbal skills; familiarity with methods employed to evaluate how air pollution impacts human health, communities, and/or plant life; the ability to interpret the statistical significance of research findings; and the ability to work independently under general guidance and in cooperation with others. Those with a strong background in health or biological sciences are encouraged to apply. Familiarity with statistical methods, statistical software (such as SAS) is a plus but not a requirement.
