Specialist, Step I-V ($62,532-95,736)

The University of California at Berkeley, School of Public Health, Division of Environmental Health Sciences (EHS), has an opening for a 100% time Specialist, step I-V to begin approximately October 1, 2008.

Duties: The Specialist position will be that of a Molecular Cytogeneticist in EHS’s Molecular Epidemiology and Toxicology Laboratory. The incumbent will:

· Assist in conducting toxicological and molecular genetic studies in a fast-paced lab to identify the causes of blood cancers and develop biomarkers to identify the risks of leukemia and lymphoma.
· Conduct high-throughput genetic analyses, isolate and quantify DNA, RNA and protein from biological samples, quantify metabolite levels of specific toxicants, and manage sample storage and tracking.
· Manage day-to-day laboratory operations.
· Have the ability to generate research ideas, develop new methods, and troubleshoot analysis problems.
· Assist in mentoring of PhD students and post-doctoral researchers.
· Supervise and train undergraduate and graduate student workers.
· Independently develop written reports and draft and/or assist in writing of scientific manuscripts for peer-reviewed publication.

Minimum Qualifications: Ph.D, Sc.D or equivalent in molecular biology, toxicology, or a closely related field. Training in molecular biology, HPLC, immunochemistry, and/or mass spectrometry. Minimum 3 years post-doctoral laboratory experience including genotyping platforms, such as PCR-RFLP, TaqMan real time PCR, Illunima, or Sequenom. Previous laboratory management and supervisory experience. Advanced computer skills including database management. Excellent verbal, written, and technical skills. Prefer experience performing cytogenetic analyses using FISH, DNA methylation assays, and DNA protein crosslinks (DPCs). Ability to relate well with other staff, take initiative and become an integral member of the research team. Prefer ability to communicate in Chinese (Mandarin) for studies conducted with China.
