Support development of laboratory methods for the rapid and reliable detection of chemicals and chemical metabolites in human specimens and environmental samples. Develop mass spectrometry methods for the detection, identification and quantitation of chemical metabolites (e.g., metabolic conjugates, protein adducts, volatiles, metal species) using atmospheric pressure ionization LC-MS instruments including both tandem and high resolution time-of-flight (TOF) instruments (as well as other instruments such as chemical ionization GC-tandem mass spectrometry or inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry). Develop screening techniques to detect exposures to unknown toxic substances through chemical analysis of complex biological specimens, and develop the required diagnostic algorithms and interpretation protocols to identify the chemicals and poisons involved. Apply new instrumental analysis techniques, technologies and expertise in a novel public health forensic toxicology program to provide laboratory services to the various divisions and programs of the Department. Coordinate advanced clinical diagnostic testing and interpret and report findings. Train laboratory staff in new techniques and new methodologies. Develop, coordinate and integrate research, pilot studies and investigations as a subject matter expert in cooperation with toxicologists, epidemiologists, physicians, engineers and other public health scientists. Consult regarding toxicology, metabolism and disposition of chemicals and clinical methodologies. Validate protocols according to current clinical laboratory quality standards, participate in performance appraisals and studies and exercises or drills leading to high levels of readiness and reliable performance in laboratory emergency response.
Requirements: Extensive knowledge in biochemistry, chemistry or related science degree with emphasis in toxicology (environmental, analytical or forensic), xenobiotic metabolism, clinical science, analytical chemistry or analytical biochemistry, demonstrated through education or equivalent experience required. Skills to apply advanced laboratory techniques to the detection, identification and quantitation of chemicals and their metabolites, conjugates and adducts in human tissues and fluids. Skills and knowledge of operation and optimization of modern atmospheric pressure ionization mass spectrometers (or similar/related modern instruments). Demonstrated skill to perform trace chemicals analysis in complex biological specimens and samples. Demonstrated skill to identify unknown substances or metabolites using advanced instrumental analysis techniques, to develop advanced instrumental analysis methods for chemical residues in complex specimens using methodical, systematic, and stepwise experiments that lead to effective and practical solutions to trace analysis problems.
