ResearchMy dissertation focuses on understanding how insecticide-treated bednets used on a household level affect the dynamics of malaria transmission on a community level. The goal of this research is to inform intervention strategies by relating bednet distribution scenarios to disease risk patterns. In pursuit of this endeavor, I apply ecological and epidemiologic analysis, mathematical and statistical modeling, and geographic information systems to a rich dataset generated by CDC/KEMRI colleagues in western Kenya.

ResearchI will be using previously collected data in Guatemala to assess the amount of quantitative improvement in exposure assessment that occurs when moving from level three to two of the exposure assessment pyramid. I will be using data I collected in India (Nov 2004-Jan 2005) to assess what one or two question(s) additional to HH fuel type would be best to add to information from level 6 as an estimate of parameters outlined in layers 3 and 4, and to answer the question "how much (quantitative) improvement in the estimate would there be for each additional question added?" Finally, I will use both sources of data to explore the difference in health outcome(s).

ResearchThe main objective of my dissertation project is to model the distribution of selected polycyclic aromatic hyrdrocarbons (PAHs) in Fresno, CA. First, I will build and validate a model of uptake and accumulation of airborn PAHs by pine needles. Then, I will back-calculate air concentrations from pine needle samples taken thoughout Fresno. Using these data, I will design a spatial model of PAH distribution in Fresno, CA also including inputs of temperature, topography, traffic patterns and activity.

ResearchIn the proposed research I plan to address the effects of biomass smoke exposures in utero and during infancy on birth weight and anthropometry in childhood. In addition, I will analyze the variations in the genotypes of key antioxidant enzymes (e.g., GSTM1 and GSTP1), in an attempt to identify which children are more susceptible to the effects of PM and CO on low birth weight and subsequent growth and development. The primary hypothesis is that biomass smoke inhaled by the mother during pregnancy and during the firs 18 months of a child's life will cause a decrease in birth weight and child growth. This proposal will analyze data from a birth cohort of infants enrolled in a NIH-funded, randomized stove intervention trial to reduce acute lower respiratory illness (ALRI) in rural Guatemala.
