Led by Dr. Martyn T. Smith since 1987, the Superfund Basic Research Program investigates biomarkers of toxic exposures and susceptibility, causes of childhood leukemia, quantification of pesticide exposures, fate and transport of chemicals in the environment, hazardous waste remediation, and children's health. In addition to research studies, it provides an infrastructure of support for the eleven faculty conducting the research.
The program also provides training to develop professionals and scholars who can assess the impact of various environmental and regulatory policies on the long-term prospects for prevention, and who can incorporate advances in science and engineering in both legislation and regulation for environmental and human health protection.
