Science and the European Molecular Biology Organization (EMBO) recently featured articles on the Environmental Genome Project. The articles mention the work of center members who are involved in the project.
In its April 25, 2003 issue, Science reported on the first phase of the Environmental Genome Project which has produced a catalog of variation in 200-and-counting genes involved in everything from processing toxins to fixing damaged DNA.
Superfund director, Martyn T. Smith, was quoted in the article for his work in folate consumption and leukemia from benzene exposure. Dr. Smith suspected that genes for metabolizing folate could also play a role in leukemia in the general population and found that leukemia patients tend to lack two SNPs in folate genes that are present in healthy people
EMBO published an article on the Environmental Genome Project in its May 2003 issue. Superfund investigators Patricia A. Buffler and Martyn T. Smith were mentioned for their research on susceptibility to leukemia.
